Title: Consuming fire
Post by: rickyz on April 05, 2022, 04:02:52 AM
The Lord God is not one god among many. He is not the greatest of all gods. Rather, He is the only God. And as such, He is to be feared by all people. We shrink back from the thought of fearing God in a desire to communicate His mercy and love. But He is also terrifying. God is described as a "consuming fire." Imagine standing before a massive forest fire that is consuming everything it touches, and everything it consumes only serves to make the fire grow larger and hotter. You would rightly feel fear or awe. This is what all should feel when we  think of God: awe. And that awe should result in our worshiping Him.

At a men's retreat I attended years ago, I learned, among many things, how the word "awesome" is so misused/overused today. When in reality it is to describe something completely awe-inspiring; something so incredible, it could only be divine. That word, they say, when used properly, will rightly describe God's many miraculous creations -- Truly Awesome!

One of the ladies in our two bible studies was a Christian school teacher for many years and she told us that the word "awesome" was only to be used in reference to God, so I try not to throw it around like I did in the old days.
