Genesis is my favorite book in the Bible and I have started reading it again after a sermon in church the other day and the pastor spoke about Genesis 1:5.  He spoke about how time relates to this verse.  Upon further reading and slowing down as I read this verse, something struck me.  Here is the verse:

And Elohim called the light "day" and the darkness He called "night."  And there came to be evening and there came to be morning, day one.

I compared this to the 7 versions of the Bible that I own and they all say pretty much the same thing.  What I find fascinating is that the first part of the verse refers to day and night in this order.  The second part of the verse reverses that order.  I am not sure where I am going with this other than to say that it certainly makes me think differently about time as it relates to events in the Bible and how they have been manipulated by man to serve the traditions of men.  There are many scriptures warning us about the traditions of men (Mark 7: 8-9 for one).

This again leads me to the topic of when the Sabbath is observed.  The Bible clearly states numerical days (Day 1, Day 2, etc...) and not the days of the week named after celestial bodies.  According to "our" calendar Sunday (worship of the sun) is the first day of the week and not the 7th day which is the day of rest, according to the Bible.  Once again, a tradition of men.

As I stated earlier, I don't know where I am going with this, but the one thing that I am really trying to do in my Bible study is to slow down and really read what is written as opposed to reading what is written and then making it fit me.  I need to read to fit my Creator's desires and wishes for me.  I am also aware that the further down the road we get with Bible translations, we lose somethings, so I am trying to read the TS 2009, the Halleluyah translations where they use the tetragrammaton and the original names in their original Hebrew form as well as some other words.

I call this one of the many rabbit holes that I go down.

Have a great evening everyone.

That is some pretty heavy thinking, but it certainly does make sense!  E|  E|  <3

Thanks lady and gents for your comments.  I would like to add a little more to my thoughts.  Upon further reading, Genesis 1: 8, 13, 19, 23, and 31 all state, depending on your translation, "there came to be evening and there came to be morning, the ___ day."  I have always been taught that when something is repeated multiple times in scripture, you better pay attention.  I'm not sure what to make of this at this point in time, I'm just sharing an observation.  Now off to research what others have to say about this and weigh their thoughts on the matter.

Tom, thanks for providing a forum for all of us to share all things Christian music, scripture, struggles, etc....

I love good conversations about God and His amazing word. Our finite, frail, mortal minds cannot possibly grasp a fraction of who God is or what He's done. It's fun to talk about things and stretch our minds. Iron sharpens iron...
