In 2008, Matt Harding, the driving force and unmistakable voice behind the Christian melodic metal band Apostle, teamed up with his son Jacob Harding to create something personal, powerful, and profoundly musical. Originally released independently and rarely heard outside of local circles, The Jacob's Ladder has long remained a hidden gem.
The album reveals a more progressive side of Matt's artistry, still packed with his signature melodic sensibilities and jaw-dropping guitar work, but tempered by grit, maturity, and a grounded, emotional delivery.
The trio format, Matt Harding (guitars, lead vocals), Jacob Harding (bass, backing vocals), and Keith Gardner (drums, backing vocals), is stripped down yet remarkably full. The chemistry between them is palpable, each musician pushing the others toward excellence. The result is a dynamic, soulful hard-rock experience reminiscent of King's X, Trytan, and the heavier moments of Atomic Opera.
Tragically, Matt Harding passed away in 2012, making The Jacob's Ladder one of the last musical offerings the world received from this gifted guitarist, songwriter, and vocalist. The album now stands as a fitting tribute to his artistry and faith, a passionate, skillfully crafted record that continues to inspire years after his passing.
Beautifully mastered by Ty Tabor (King's X), this long-overlooked album shines with warmth, punch, and clarity. Fans of classic Christian melodic metal will recognize the familiar voice, but Jacob's Ladder carves its own identity—more progressive, more personal, and every bit as inspired.
