A few months ago I contacted my friend and Sonic Divide keyboardist, Andy Young, about their forthcoming album "The Other Side" and was given an advanced copy which I still have in my player and listen to often. The album was released in March of 2020 and features 12 tracks of hard rock awesomeness! I have been a fan since first hearing their debut self-titled album which was released back in 2013, so this is a long time coming.
One thing I can say right off is that this Aussie band knows how to rock. I have listened to rock and metal long enough to know that most sophomore albums seem to be a let down, especially when they put out killer debuts. Well, that is not the case with Sonic Divide. We got to debut the song "Come Back Again" here on D2S Radio and it has been one of our most requested songs for a few months now. I can also say, at this point, I still listen to the whole album without hitting the skip button.
I love lead vocalist Wayne Holden's voice, he reminds me a little of Europe's Joey Tempest. Duel guitarists Steve Pirie and Glenn Johnson play well together with great hooks and leads. The rhythm section, Ian Slade (bass) and Evan Johnson (drums) blend in well and are very talented to boot. And I cannot forget Andy Young's keyboards. Not too little, not too much... just right.
I listen to a lot of different types of music and one thing I truly love is when it takes me away. What I mean is, I love to get lost in the music. I find myself doing that with this album. I truly love the album as a whole but there are a few songs that I could put on repeat all day long including the rocker "Alive", "Shot In The Dark", "Come Back Again", and the few ballads, which I am a huge sucker for, "I Still Believe" and my favorite "When It Bleeds".
Overall, this is an excellent hard rocking album with just the right amount of foot stompin', in your face rock with a few amazing ballads mixed in. Production is stellar, the mix is perfect, excellent song writing, cool album cover... yeah, it's a KEEPER!
