Myrrh Records
Country: United States of America
Myrrh Records, a subsidiary of Word Entertainment, was founded in 1972 by Billy Ray Hearn. Probably the biggest discovery to come along for Myrrh Records was teenage singer named Amy Grant, who hit the Contemporary Christian music scene in 1977. Grant's albums were so popular, both inside and outside of the Christian music industry, that Word entered into an agreement with A&M Records to reissue her entire back catalog in the mainstream music industry. In addition, A&M promoted Grant as a pop music artist in the mainstream. In 1985, Grant released her first concurrent Myrrh/A&M release, Unguarded, which featured four different album covers.
Other popular artists signed to the label at one time or another include Malcolm and Alwyn, Barry McGuire, 2nd Chapter of Acts, Randy Matthews, Petra, GLAD, David and the Giants Billy Preston, Richie Furay, B.J. Thomas, Steve Archer, Mark Heard, Randy Stonehill, Leslie Phillips, Joe English (former drummer for Paul McCartney's Wings), Mylon & Broken Heart, Crystal Lewis, Dakoda Motor Co. (Peter King-MTV), Cliff Richard, The Choir, Steve Taylor, Phil Keaggy, One Bad Pig, The 77s, Salvation Air Force, Benny Hester, Mike Warnke, Nancy Honeytree and many others.
In the mid-1980s, Word had a sub-label called Myrrh-LA that featured California bands as opposed to the rest of the Nashville-centric industry. In the year 2000, Word Entertainment announced it was discontinuing the label and shifting the artist roster to Word Records. In the year 2005, Word Entertainment re-launched the label as Myrrh Worship, focusing on Praise and Worship Music. The current artist roster consist of Pocket Full Of Rocks and Women Of Faith Worship Team.
The label has also released recordings by Al Green, B.J. Thomas, Benny Hester, Billy Preston, Bob Ayala, The Choir, Cliff Richard, Crystal Lewis, Dakoda Motor Company, David and the Giants, GLAD, Jaci Velasquez, Malcolm and Alwyn, Mark Heard, Michael and Stormie Omartian, Mike Warnke, Miss Angie, Maria Muldaur, One Bad Pig, Petra, Phil Keaggy, Randy Matthews, Randy Stonehill, Richie Furay, Earth, Wind & Fire singer Philip Bailey, Leslie Phillips, Servant, Steve Archer, Steve Taylor, and The 77s.
The label began as Myrrh Records in 1972 but took a five year hiatus beginning in 2000 before being restarted by parent company Word Entertainment under the name Myrrh Worship in 2005. In 2014, the name was changed to Word Worship, again retiring the Myrrh name.
The first four albums released by Myrrh Records were Day By Day by Vonda Kay Van Dyke, All I Am Is What You See... by Randy Matthews, as well as the self-titled albums by Crimson Bridge, and Dust.
