Steve Ashley was born and raised in a small town in southern Michigan and began playing guitar at the late age of 19. After several years of practicing and learning, he formed the Christian Band Nouveaux with his friend Kurt Lehman. After adding Paul Alan on lead vocals and keyboards, the band began playing for the Breakout Drug Education Program in high schools in the southern Michigan area. Nouveaux began writing songs and eventually got signed to Benson Records in Nashville, Tennessee in 1994 and toured for about 4 years with various artists including Micheal Sweet from Stryper, Imagine This and many others.
